then look up, and lift up your heads;
for your redemption draweth nigh.

THE HOLY BIBLE (Darby Translation)
FastSearch Help

The Basics

Think of using the search engine just like you would your Bible's Concordance. Pick the most important word of the verse you are looking for and try it first. If you are looking for a subject, you might also try related words. Thus, to find information on fasting, you might enter the following query: fast, fasts, fasting, fasted. If you know an exact phrase that is in the Bible that you want to find, go ahead and enter it directly. For example, entering jesus wept will return John 11:35 in several site Bibles. If you aren't sure of the wording, either limit the words or use the detailed search form to request partial matches or restrict the books to search.

If you are searching a foreign language Bible, you must enter a query in the same foreign language, obeying all special character annotations such as circumflexes, accents, tildes, etcetera. We don't do on the fly language query translation. A table is provided below the search form with the method of entering the special language character annotations - basically you enter the special symbol after the character. If you need to use an English query, search an English Bible first and then use the parallel Bible display facility to see it in the foreign language.

Word searches are best when searching references. It is very unlikely that you will match a phrase in a reference. Likewise, don't get too precise. Searching for nile will return many more hits than searching for nile river.

The Search Engine Options

Access to the search engine is provided in two formats. The simpler version, allows the user to enter a word, phrase, or series of words to locate in the document or documents.

The detailed options selection can also be used to bring up a more detailed search form. This allows you to specify case sensitivity when searching, request that partial matches be displayed, and allow a small number of spelling errors.

Using the detailed form, only recently modified files can be selected, and the default maximum number of files and maximum number of matches per file can be modified. Once topics are displayed, the number of initial verses of context around the specified scripture link can also be selected.

It is generally a good idea to not specify too many spelling errors as the number of matches can increase rapidly.

How to Enter a Search Topic

Unless partial match is selected, then car will match car, but not car10. Searching for good;bad will select all verses or topics with both the word good or bad in them as long as both words appear in the file someplace. Searching for good, bad will select all verses or topics with either the word good or bad in them. Searching for spiritual warfare will select all verses and topics with that exact phrase in them.

Neighborhoods

If searching from the index page of a collection of web pages - for example

then all associated files are searched since all form the neighborhood. Searching the full archive has exactly the same effect as searching the neighborhood.

If searched from one of a collection's member files (for example the Authorized Version of the Bible's book of Matthew), then searching the neighborhood has the effect of searching all files within 1 HTML link or hop of that book. For example, the neighborhood of Matthew is Mark and Malachi.

To see the list of all files which will be searched, select the Search Options from the table and select the option at the bottom to list the neighborhood. To search on all files in the particular search archive regardless of your present location, select The full archive instead of a neighborhood search.
