Jul 28, 2004: Fixed error in concordance scripts where values archived by search engines were producing errant results for some queries due to an index rebuild locally. They should now hopefully find the right entry, and if not at least not try to dump out several hundred megabytes of junk. Apologies to all.
Jul 25, 2004: Fixed error reported by Carlos in Luke 1:54 source text in the Portuguese Bible. Made up all needed download archives and PDF bibles to match.
Jul 25, 2004: Fixed error reported by Carlos in the Psalms (Greek original) source text in Vulgate Bible. Made up all needed download archives and PDF bibles to match.
Jun 19, 2004: Fixed links to FTP server, and added FTP server links for PDF bibles.
Oct 26, 2003: Added last modified tags for all HTML pages to try to help out search engine HEAD access to files.
Oct 26, 2003: Modified the program that strips HTML out of web pages for the search engine to match lines with. The speed up doesn't really affect most searches, but the search of Matthew Henry's Commentary is dramatically improved due to its sheer size. It was also previously not running properly due to a file creation issue. The new version doesn't need any temporary files. This should improve the results of searches which searched for words contained in links.
Jul 27, 2003: Added printable PDF Bibles. All are marked up like the HTML Bibles - each verse is labeled for reference. That makes it easy to provide useful bookmarks and Bible scripture linkages in the Douay-Rheims and Darby Bibles as well as some introductions of other Bibles.
Apr 25, 2003: Upgraded O/S.
Apr 24, 2003: Added some background graphics to help out WebTV users who had problems with the solid backgrounds. Hopefully they aren't distracting enough to cause problems for anyone.
Apr 23, 2003: Upgraded all HTML pages with images to include a TITLE in addition to ALT tag on images so they would be properly displayed on all browsers.
Nov 10, 2002: Upgraded feedback form processing to include a spam and language filter.
Oct 17, 2002 (08:15): Upgraded O/S.
Oct 4, 2002 (17:05): Upgraded web server to latest version.
Sep 24, 2002: Upgraded web server to latest version.
Sep 17, 2002: We have modified our server to accomodate HTTP/1.0 and older clients that don't provide a host setting. Hopefully, this will be completely transparent to all HTTP/1.1 clients. At the same time, we have corrected all links to James and Judges in Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary, added it to our reference search for where particular scriptures are used, and cleaned up some other minor problems discovered during the HTTP/1.0 conversion process.
Aug 22, 2002: The privacy policy has been synchronized to the new logging features of the new server and updated to reflect our real world operating conditions to give a bit more clarity of what we log and for how long.
Aug 22, 2002: We are now running a new version of the web server which shouldn't be so memory hungry and should provide even faster responses. Let us know if you like it.
Aug 22, 2002: We are running a secure site for the content at www.awmach.org. There is no new content available over the SSL channel. It is simply a mirrored virtual host for www.awmach.org. We are using a self-signed certificate. Your browser will complain about it. Tell your browser to accept it and go on with your browsing over the SSL link. Please don't use this feature unless secure transmissions are absolutely needed as it does take CPU time to provide a secure SSL connection. Be advised that just accessing a SSL connection might raise red flags in people trying to monitor your activity. Also be advised that no SSL connection is completely secure given enough time and resources. Happy browsing.
Aug 10, 2002: With a new operating system and web server, we hope the site will be a bit faster for everyone. Overall the site was only down for around 3 hours, although I didn't get FTP up till today - sorry for the oversight. We now dynamically compress the web pages for browsers that say they can handle compressed feeds. This should drop our bandwidth requirements and help everyone out - particularly modem users. MSIE users should be sure to select HTTP/1.1 as their protocol. As always caching results and having the browser not fetch them if they have been recently read helps everyone out by reducing bandwidth even more. Now if the spiders would just start handling compressed feeds, we'd all be in great shape.
July 14, 2002: The first version of Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary is now posted thanks in large part to CCEL. Let me know of problems please!
July 14, 2002: Since Mozilla, et al. don't seem to be picking up on the Netscape Communicator MULTICOL tag, I've converted some of the scripts to approximate a two column via a table until W3C finalizes the multicolumn standard and it gets implemented.
May 18, 2002: Maybe not news, but the roof work was finished by Tops-All, without any apparent interruption in service - way to go guys!
March 9, 2002: Yesterday's IP address reassignments were a bit slower than hoped, but should now be complete. If there are problems, please let me know.
March 5, 2002: Special note of apology to our Russian search engine users. I fixed the bug that was converting two letter character combinations improperly. Hopefully this will let the search engine work better. I also got the Portuguese artifact on the failed search results page replaced with Russian. Sorry. Not one of my best foreign language implementations.
February 17, 2002: The Young's Literal Translation is now provided in a red letter edition. A few instances of phrase splitting differences between the AV and Youngs have been modified to match the AV in order to allow proper linking from the reference works.
February 8, 2002: A typo in the Webster Bible has been fixed Job 3:3 had mail child instead of male child.
July 10, 2001: We have added a Russian Bible to the site. It is in the KOI8-R character set when viewed directly or via the FastAccess or Search facilities. When viewed as a Bible link or in parallel with other Bible version, it is converted to UTF-8. Links to this Bible have been added to the other features of the site.
July 10, 2001: Greek lettering has been moved to UTF-8 from the native ISO-8859-7 character set.
June 27, 2001: The Darby Bible is now a red-letter edition with the words of Christ in red.
April 15, 2001: I now provide the Haller's Concordances - exhaustive listings of every word used in every on-site Bible. Each word listing includes a list of all verses where it is found, along with a few words around it to help identify the verse.
Feb 1, 2001: The Douay-Rheims Bible is now a red-letter edition with the words of Christ in red.
January 20, 2001: A new option is available for Netscape browser users - a two column format for most topical references and bible displays. For those with higher resolution monitors, this can make it a bit easier to read the references as the screen width is used more efficiently. In addition, some find slightly narrower columns less fatiguing to read than very long lines. No solution in site for the IE folks though. Recommend the MULTICOL tag to Microsoft as a most desired enhancement! I have noted that sometimes Netscape may choke in following some single character links (scripture verse cross references §) in the right column - they show up as links, but the mouse can't activate them. Oh well, no gain without some loss. Scripture links in the right column have always seemed OK though.
Several forms for fast access to Bibles and concordance searches were adjusted to attempt to make them fit better on smaller 800x600 monitors.
Matthew Henry's Commentary now uses the fast display program and has the ability to select versions for scripture links in its fast access mode.
When using the scripture cross-reference tool, the scripture reference in topical commentaries such as Nave's, Torrey's, and Easton's, will now be highlighted so it can be found more easily.
Some problems with the Greek combined version fast display option have been fixed.
January 17, 2001: To help our WebTV friends with yearly Bible reading, the full year bible reading schedules can now be displayed with a plain option which kills the white background for displayed scripture. In addition, they can be displayed in a two-column format for Netscape browsers.
January 7, 2001: I added a copy of the Martin Luther 1545 Translation of the Bible to our list of site Bibles.
December 31, 2000: I added the Joćo Ferreira Portuguese Translation of the Bible to our list of site Bibles, complete with search engine and all other features. To our friends in Brazil and Portugal - we hope this benefits your walk with Christ.
Dec 3, 2000: A new cross-reference feature option has been added to the Bible verse display and Bible portion fast access features of the site. When clicked, the site searches for all places where the current verse is referenced with a dynamic link on awmach.org. This could be in on-line references, sermons, or bible commentaries. A list of these resources is provided, with the main list item giving the full document and any sub lists providing direct links to the portion of the document with the reference. Some topical references refer to large groups of scripture (for example the first x books of Psalms). These are included in the list along with references to the specific verse in question.
June 24, 2000: We have just added an Italian Bible - the Riveduta/Luzzi edition, and integrated it in with the other Bible selection functions.
April 22, 2000: This spring, we have provided a facelift to our site to hopefully make navigation easier. In addition there are a few new features such as displaying the Greek Bible in Greek letters as an option, corrected book ordering for the Douay-Rheims and Vulgate Bibles (along with their various scrolled lists of Bible books for selections), improved layouts for the detailed search engines, additional help facilities, and hooks for foreign language areas for the Gospel message, doctrine, and worship service formats, along with help pages. We are currently using the automatically translated pages, which are currently being proofread by people who know the language. If you spot errors, please let us know!
February 22, 2000: All Darby notes which refer directly to other notes now bring up the note instead of the verse the note is about. The Greek Bible which contains four major merged Greek MSSs, can now be accessed as individual Greek MSSs. Finally, all Bible concordance and table of contents pages have a form for Fast Access to hopefully speed up people's access to the parts of the Word they want to read.
February 16, 2000: Today, we are releasing a new version of the references and Darby and Douay-Rheims bibles with all verse references changed from a c=#~v=# format to n=#:# format. This was done primarily to conserve bandwidth, but also to make it easier to convert from our Perl scripts to direct references for people using the site materials offline. In addition, the Darby notes have been revised to include more scripture links, and fix links which were of multiple lines where only one was visible - the heading without the associated text.
January 8, 2000: We appreciate your faithfulness to our site and hope that the new year will bring you closer to God and His plan for you.
In the first two and one half days of 2000, we had roughly twice the activity on the web site measured by hits, files, pageviews, and sessions, and sent out approximately six times the amount of data as we did in the entire month of January in 1999.
The site traffic has grown about 73 fold in terms of hits, et cetera, and 177 fold in terms of data transmitted for the full year 1999 compared to 1998 when we first went live. We don't expect to see quite that large a rate of increase this year since some major search engines hadn't fully examined us by the end of 1998, but activity is still increasing.
We hope we will continue to provide useful information to the world in the coming year and that we can keep the site on a free host so we can stay ad-free and banner free. May God's blessings go with you as we all follow His will.
November 17, 1999: The complete Douay-Rheims Challoner's Version is now available. We previously only had the Rheims New Testament.
October 18, 1999: We are now running on a newer server which should speed up queries. We have also adjusted our color map to try to use "Netscape Safe Colors" which really aren't completely safe, but may prevent losses of some colors as you move through the site. The daily bible reading calendar has been improved.
October 10, 1999: A German Martin Luther translation of the Bible has been added to the website. There are improvements to the information buttons in foreign languages and translated foreign language Bible reading calendars.
July 30, 1999: The search engine has been improved to provide better searches - most in-line punctuation will be ignored when matching phrases. In addition, the Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary source has been modified to allow the search results to retain their HTML formatting (including hooks to scriptures). Finally, a complete site search services is now provided by clicking on the cross in the left frame. This is much slower than the searches of an individual Bible, but does provide the capability to search all site Bibles, References, and Commentaries with a single query.
June 27, 1999: The proofreading of the Torrey's Topical Textbook is complete - thanks to Vi Haller for many hours of dedicated effort. In addition, access modes have been restored to the FTP directory - our apologies to all who tried to download recently and were unsuccesful.
June 5, 1999: A new plain option will start appearing as a check box or link on several documents to remove some background coloration for viewers with broken browsers which can't handle style sheet DIV statements. This may also give a better viewing format for WebTV surfers with older TVs which have problems with white backgrounds in the scriptures.
June 5, 1999: We have added a Darby Bible note dumper, which eliminates loading a large note file just to see the information about a single verse.
May 1, 1999: A new frameset structure has been designed to allow easier use of the left frame as an index without needlessly loading the right page unless a specific page is selected. These are marked with blue dots. Blue arrows are menus. The items in the main right page still set up the full window as needed. There are easier and more visible hooks to features such as downloads and searches.
Apr. 7, 1999: An anonymous FTP server is running with access to the Bible and Reference Archive in the pub/outgoing directory.
Mar. 22, 1999: A new Archive is available with gzip'd and zip'd copies of the site Bibles and primary reference works. These include ONLY the source text, and do not include any of the software used on our site to do searches, display chapters and verses, et cetera. The Bibles are marked up appropriately to allow our software to find scriptures - other sites on the net provide cleaner copies which will take less room on your hard disk. In addition, all scripture references in the commentaries are exactly as they appear on our site, with links to scripts which do the work of handling the user's Bible preference. You are welcome to download any of these for your own use and may be able to substitute simple scripts which still will access a particular Bible or convert the files with a macro to directly link to a particular Bible. Remember, these files are JUST the raw base text our site uses, and DO NOT duplicate the site's functionality.
Feb. 9, 1999: The search engines now have an international character interface which works and is easier to use. In addition, the presence of italicized words in the scripture text no longer prevents matches. Apologies to those who have had trouble finding references with the engine.
Jan. 31, 1999: The Bible in a Year function now provides a calendar based display, and the ability to select any site Bible to read.
Jan. 30, 1999: The 1910 French Louis Segond Translation of the Bible has been added to the collection.
Jan. 24, 1999: The 1909 Spanish Reina-Valera Translation of the Bible has been added to the collection.
Jan. 14, 1999: Search results are now sorted to the expected order:
Jan. 4, 1999: All topical reference displays coming through the index pages or a search can now select a Bible translation to use for the associated scripture links.
Jan. 4, 1999: The topical reference search engines now provide an option to provide results in two formats.
